'Amazing Spider-Man' Lizard Leak Raises Questions

In this week's Marvel Mania, we use a recent 'Spider-Man' controversy to consider whether it's fair to judge a movie based on leaks.
By Josh Wigler

Over the years, big-budget blockbusters have revealed themselves in increasingly inventive ways. "The Dark Knight" gave us our first look at Heath Ledger's Joker by way of an elaborate viral game, for instance, and just this year, "The Dark Knight Rises" instituted a similar treatment for the villainous Bane. Even on the Marvel side of the aisle, we've seen creative, out-of-the-box revelations — like the buildup to "The Avengers" through numerous post-credits sequences, for example.

But revealing your villain through a PEZ dispenser? That's a new one, even for the House of Ideas!

Nonetheless, that's exactly how we got our first look at the Lizard, the villain played by Rhys Ifans in next summer's "The Amazing Spider-Man." Earlier in the week, a photo of an officially licensed "Spider-Man" PEZ dispenser leaked online and gave eager webheads their first and, really, only taste yet of what Curt Connors' monstrous transformation will look like when the Sony film swings into theaters.

A separate leak occurred earlier Wednesday (November 30), this time in the form of an alleged concept design showing Lizard in all his menacing glory. Folks lucky enough to have caught the "Amazing Spider-Man" panel at Comic-Con this year are largely in agreement on the blurry design's authenticity, giving fans bummed by the PEZ reveal another shot at getting to know the Lizard on better terms.

We can argue for days over whether the design itself is up to snuff — the biggest bone of contention is Lizard's lack of an elongated snout, based on fan reactions seen thus far — but no one's going to stand here and say that a frickin' PEZ dispenser is the best way to meet a highly anticipated movie character for the very first time. The concept art, however, is a somewhat different story; if that's a legitimate design, whether officially released or not, perhaps it is worth decoding.

For me, Lizard-Gate raises an interesting point about the changing shape of movie consumption in the digital age. Early looks at leaked material — like the Lizard concept art and his filthy PEZ habit — can either build buzz and excitement for a movie or they can crush all enthusiasm in one fell swoop. But is it fair to judge this crucial aspect of "Spider-Man" (or any movie) based on something that wasn't officially released? Can we really pile hate on Lizard based on candy of all things?

In a perfect world, we would be able to reserve all judgment of a movie until the movie's actual arrival. But it's not a perfect world; it's a lightning-paced digital one, and where there's an Internet, there's a picture of a Lizard PEZ dispenser that's bound to inform your opinion of "Amazing Spider-Man" in some way, no matter how big or small. Ultimately, it comes down to the click of a button: Are you so curious about an upcoming movie that you need to digest any and all information as soon as it's available, or can you look away long enough for the official goods to drop?

I don't think there's a right or a wrong answer here. In the end, it's a personal choice: Either you want to look, or you don't. Nobody's going to die because you stared at a PEZ dispenser for a few minutes (don't hold me to that, please). But the next time you find yourself on the horizon of that choice, consider Uncle Ben's famous words of wisdom: With great power comes great responsibility — or, to riff on another famous phrase, "To PEZ or not to PEZ; that is the question."

'Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Has A 'Global Feeling'

Director Bill Condon calls final 'Twilight' film 'epic,' while screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg promises it will be 'kick butt.'

"Breaking Dawn - Part 1" has officially arrived in theaters, and you know what that means: Let the talk about "Part 2" begin!

MTV News' Josh Horowitz sat down with director Bill Condon and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to discuss what Twi-hards can expect from the conclusion of "The Twilight Saga."

Condon hinted that there will be a significant jump in tone between "Part 1" and "Part 2," a film he described as "epic." "['Breaking Dawn - Part 1'] is a very, very emotional, romantic story in the first half that gets dark and has elements of a horror movie in it," he said, possibly referring to the infamous birth scene.

In "Part 2," Condon said the action will focus on the larger world of vampires, which comes into the conflict with the birth of Bella and Edward's daughter, Renesmee. "The second one: It is truly the meeting of the vampires from around the world, so it has a really kind of global feeling," he said.

Rosenberg promised one thing: action. "The journey of the second film is survival, and it is kick butt. There's going to be some action going on there," she said.

Both Condon and Rosenberg were hesitant to comment on how the second film will end. Condon said he knows how it ends, but wouldn't offer much else, saying only, "It's an ending."

Rosenberg, on the other hand, was more giving, and said the answer lies in what Stephenie Meyer originally wrote. "It's in the book, and it felt right," she said.

'Dark Knight Rises' Is 'Just Epic,' Gary Oldman Says

'I will say this: There's a conclusion,' actor tells MTV News of 'Rises' being the last in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Gary Oldman may have learned his lesson about speaking candidly when it comes to Batman movies.

When he spoke with MTV News' Josh Horowitz while promoting "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," Oldman measured each word about "The Dark Knight Rises" carefully.

Quite a few seconds passed before Oldman started to answer our first question about the next Batman movie, but he assured Horowitz that it was not something to read into. Oldman was quick to recount the tale of the time he opened up at Comic-Con two years ago and said the next Batman film would happen in the next year or so.

"It went around the world," Oldman marveled. "[Warner Bros. is] the studio, and it's their prerogative."

When he finally did open up about the purported finale of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Oldman offered up some insights into the overall vision of the film.

"I will say this: There's a conclusion. He touches on the first [film] and weaves it in," he said. "It resolves. I think it's a trilogy. It's just great. The story is terrific. It is just epic."

One of the biggest shadows "The Dark Knight Rises" will need to escape is the legacy of Heath Ledger's iconic performance. Oldman said the choice of Bane as the villain was a strategic one on Nolan's part.

"I think it was smart of Chris to go with a lesser-known villain rather than — because Heath's performance, first of all, we love the Joker in Batman," Oldman said. "Heath's performance was so dazzling that you got to think, 'How the hell do I top it?' Instead of going for Riddler, instead of going for Penguin, he's gone a slightly different way with the story."

Finally, Oldman commented on the essential role of "Rises" in Nolan's Batman story, saying it is something more than a cash grab. "I think [Nolan's] got enough smarts and enough class. I know this much about Chris Nolan: He wouldn't make a third for the sake of it," he said.

'Dark Knight Rises': Why We're Finally Excited

New details about the film reveal an actual movie in this edition of The Weekly Rising.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Christian Bale and Tom Hardy on the set of "Dark Knight Rises" in New York City
Photo: Getty Images

Empire has just unleashed a mountain of awesomeness. Beyond the cover photos, we now have plot details, a description of Bane's character (hint: it involves crushing skulls) and a confirmation of the content of the prologue.

You decided, and the votes have been counted. Empire revealed Bane as the first of their two "Dark Knight Rises" covers, and we all got to see Tom Hardy in his evil asthmatic getup straight on for the first time.

It wasn't anything we couldn't have extrapolated from what we've already seen of him, but there is something to be said about looking at an almost unrecognizable Hardy face-to-face. It's like seeing him from his days in "Bronson" (which, if you haven't seen, do so immediately), but even crazier, and that's saying something.

This really is an entirely different look at Bane than we've seen before. If you were like me and gave your computer screen a serious "huh?" when you heard about the casting news, this picture puts to rest any idea that the Bane of the Schumacher Bat-verse is dead and buried.

Hardy and Nolan's Bane is dark, scary and might need some Proactiv Solution Deep Cleansing body wash for whatever is happening on his shoulder. (This edition of The Weekly Rising is brought you to by Proactiv.)

It's difficult not to reminisce about the now-iconic Empire cover with a smirking Heath Ledger as the Joker, one of the best early looks we got at his character. The image of Bane doesn't quite measure up for several reasons — the main being that it's Bane we're talking about here — but seeing "The Dark Knight Rises" promoted in any way like "The Dark Knight" was and is always welcome.

We do have to pause and give the Batman some credit. Bane may have beaten him in the polls, but the reveal of the second-place picture brought more surprise than the Bane image, which we've more or less seen in the deluge of spy photos from the set. The Batman cover shows as the Caped Crusader we all need but don't deserve, and he's packing more heat than we expected.

Mild Spoilers Ahead The big question emerging from these photos will be, "What the hell is that thing Batman's holding?" Any kind of speculation would be completely arbitrary and meaningless at this point, so let's guess what it is. In photos from the set down on Wall Street, we've seen a large timed device that looks like near-future technology, somewhat on par with what we've already seen from the Nolan Batman films. The gun may work to counteract that tech or it could be just a new weapon. Like I said, speculation is meaningless. End Spoilers

Secrets about the film lay inside Empire, and I won't get into them here. The issue hits newsstands on November 24 and details have already begun to trickle out, but I feel the new info means a lot more than just secrets revealed.

What the new issue of Empire does with its set visit and plot details is give us an actual sense that "The Dark Knight Rises" is a film and not just a series of set photos. There is a real story here, and it looks like Nolan is once again doing something unexpected with this story. Every new bit of information inspires excitement beyond what any spy photos or videos could. Nolan and company plan to end their story of Bruce Wayne and the Batman in a way that is final and true to the vision they've explored in two films thus far. This is incredibly exciting stuff.

For the first time, the news about "The Dark Knight Rises" signals what Nolan hopes to do with the film: complete a trilogy. The scraps of news and rumors from the set we've had to chew on so far have trivialized what's really going on here. It is not about Catwoman's ear, Bane's fur coat or the Batwing. The new information from Empire finally gave us an idea of what we can expect from the two hours we'll all spend in the dark this coming July.

What did you think of the new details? Let me know on Twitter via @MTVMoviesBlog, and we'll discuss next week. Also, be sure to check out our new weekly discussion show, "Talk Nerdy to Me."

Tom Hiddleston Has A Banner Year With 'Avengers,' 'Thor'

With five releases in 2011, Brit even made time for a Woody Allen movie, and he talks about it all in MTV News' Thankful Week.
By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Tom Hiddleston
Photo: AFP

To say that 2011 has been a banner year for relative newcomer Tom Hiddleston would be a serious understatement. If you didn't see him beginning to discover his mischievous roots as Loki in "Thor," you may have caught him in "Midnight in Paris" as F. Scott Fitzgerald, or noticed his name and/or face in trailers and posters for the upcoming dramas "War Horse" and "The Deep Blue Sea." Not to mention all the attention paid to the filming of his villainous role in next year's surefire summer smash "The Avengers."

It's been a banner year indeed for Hiddleston, and from the looks of things, the very talented and delightfully disarmingly charming Englishman is just getting started. It should therefore come as no surprise to see that Tom Hiddleston is one of the actors for whom we're most thankful this year.

MTV News recently caught up with the 30-year-old to discuss his big year, what he is most thankful for and what the future has in store for him.

MTV: With "Thor," "Midnight in Paris," "War Horse" and "The Avengers," this has been an amazing year for you, yes?

Tom Hiddleston: Yeah, it has been amazing. Amazing that I was even remotely considered for any of those roles. Amazing that I got them, and amazing that they turned into the films that they turned into. It's hard enough to make a film ... God knows anyone involved in the business, no one ever sets out to make a bad one. I've just been so very lucky. I've worked with some incredibly talented people whose chances of making a bad film are certainly slimmer, but they're all extraordinary films in their own right.

MTV: Looking back at the start of your career, is this the kind of success you wanted?

Hiddleston: Oh yeah, but you dare not dream about it, you dare not dream. Sometimes to dream it, you think, almost, you kill the dream by trying to conceive it in your imagination. So my way, my process of making my way in the world is to put one foot in front of the other, accept each job for its own merits and that will lead to whatever it will lead to. And suddenly you're doing five films in one year and they're all awesome.

MTV: In the spirit of being one of the actors for whom we're most thankful, what are you thankful for this year?

Hiddleston: I can't believe you're thankful for me! I am so beyond proud. I am thankful for so much. I am thankful for the things I hope I never take for granted: the love and support of my family, for my friends and their successes, and for the fact that life is generally pretty damn amazing if you let it be. I'm thankful for the fact that I can sleep on planes. ... I know many people can't. ... I am thankful for my Nike "Flywire" red-stripe/ white-tick running shoes. ... I'm thankful for my iPod Shuffle too and the music that propels me round these wonderful places. Come to think of it, I am thankful that I can run at all. There is nothing like the feeling of health: mens sana in corpore sano (a sound mind in a healthy body). I only realized that fully when I hit my late 20s. I am thankful that I made it to 30 in one piece! Thankful for my 30th birthday party, which was incredible and featured the greatest dance-off between my friends that I have ever seen. The dance floor was the star. It was raised up like a stage and had flashing lights underneath it like a cross between the sidewalk in Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and the floor in "Saturday Night Fever." ... I'm thankful for the new album by Bon Iver, which I've just seen is the most played music in my iTunes Library. I am thankful for some incredible movies. My top five for 2011 are, in no particular order: "The Tree of Life," "Warrior," "Drive," "Bridesmaids" and "The Help." But I also haven't seen a lot of the most talked-about yet: "Shame," "The Descendants," "The Artist," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." I'm looking forward to all of those enormously.

MTV: How would you summarize this last year for you, career-wise? What kind of recognition are you now getting that you might not have had before?

Hiddleston: It has been an extraordinary year. Quite literally out of the ordinary. If the 30 years leading up to this one could be classified as "ordinary," this one definitely has the "extra" on the front. ... I feel incredibly fortunate: fortunate to have worked with some of the greatest directors alive and working today; fortunate to have been in films that have affected people and ignited in their imagination; fortunate to have played such a diverse range of roles across such different projects. I have shuffled in the shoes of Scott Fitzgerald, filled the boots of a First World War cavalry captain, fallen in and out of love with Rachel Weisz and run riot (twice) as the chaos-craving comic-book mischief-maker himself. I couldn't have dreamed it better. ... In terms of what I get now that I might not have gotten before: letters! I have received letters written with such passion and fervor that they reinvigorate and reinspire me to get back to work. An actor is not an actor without an audience. And if the audience is moved and inspired, as some have beautifully expressed that they have been in their writing, then I find that more meaningful than anything in the world. But I can still walk down the street to buy bananas without getting recognized, if that's what you mean.

MTV: What's next? Where do you go from here?

Hiddleston: At the moment, I am playing Prince Hal in Shakespeare's "Henry IV" part 1 and part 2, and Henry V in "Henry V." Hal was a drunken rebel, and Henry V was the greatest warrior king of England, and the fun part is that they're the same man. It's a great character arc. We are shooting the three plays as three separate films for BBC and NBCUniversal, directed by Richard Eyre and Thea Sharrock, and produced by Sam Mendes' Neal Street Productions. They'll be on TV at the same time as the broadcast of the London Olympics. It's mud, blood and warrior poetry for me. Back to my roots. "The Avengers" is released on May 4, 2012, which is, um ... exciting! And then Chris Hemsworth and I will beam back up to Asgard for "Thor 2." The rest is a blank page. Just the way I like it. The surprises are the best part.

'Breaking Dawn' Midnight Screenings Earn $30 Million

Box-office haul is enough to break series record but a far cry from all-time high set by 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.'
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Box-office analysts predicted that the returns for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" were going to be big, but now we're finally getting an idea of just how big.

The totals from Thursday's midnight showings are in, and "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" just barely broke the series record by earning $30.25 million; "Eclipse" held the previous best for the series with $30.1 million. That works out to be almost $8,600 per location just from the midnight showings.

While impressive, the midnight totals for "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" were still a far cry from the record set by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," which earned $43.5.

Ray Subers from Box Office Mojo expects "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" to follow the pattern set by "New Moon" in 2009 for its Friday total, which was $83 million, and then go on to earn $160 million for its total opening weekend, which would make it the second-best opening of the year and all-time, again behind "Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

Summit had originally predicted that the penultimate entry in the series could earn anywhere from $110 million to $125 million in its opening weekend. Rival studios claimed this number was purposely lower than actual expectations, which they put at more than the "New Moon" $142 million total.

To put the midnight total into perspective, Taylor Lautner's last film, "Abduction," has earned only $27.5 million in the two months since its release.

Robbie Williams has been helping Craig Colton to write songs?

In the wake of his X Factor departure, Craig Colton has done some talking about? well, about X Factor really.

The main question everyone seems to have asked Craig today is; does he blame the poor choice of song he sang on Saturday for the lack of votes he received?

The answer to that question seems to be yes.

?I really enjoyed singing the song on Saturday night? Craig told Digital Spy. ?There's been lots of comments about it being the wrong song. Personally, I wasn't that keen on the song and I think at this stage in the competition it is all about song choice?

But Craig doesn?t seem bitter about getting kicked off the programme, he said:

?I made the final 16. I was the 11th to go. I've got nothing at all to be down about. I think this competition is down to song choice now and I just hope that is something all the contestants learn from this."

He also doesn?t seem to be in a bad mood with Gary because of it. He says he trusts the Take That singer ?100%? and has been getting loads of career advice from him as well as, strangely, his bandmate Robbie Williams. Craig explained:

"After Judges' Houses, I kept in touch with Robbie as well. We exchanged numbers and email addresses. We kept in touch throughout the whole process and he's definitely a friend as well."

"He's just been really supportive and trying to help me where possible. I'm really passionate about songwriting and he's been helping me with that, helping me be the best that I can and demonstrated on a few of his own tracks how he wrote them. He's definitely, definitely helping me and he's a lovely guy."

Well we?ll watch this space then we suppose.

In Touch Exclusive: Kate Middleton Is Pregnant!

KateMiddleton1116.jpg
It?s been nearly seven months since they walked down the aisle to the delight of millions. But now, Prince William and Kate Middleton have an even bigger reason to celebrate. In Touch has learned that Kate is around six weeks pregnant with their first child ? and she and William couldn?t be more relieved. ?Since before they even got married, it?s been made clear to William and Kate that having children should be their number-one priority,? a royal source reveals, adding that Queen Elizabeth II, in particular, has been dropping so many hints about wanting a great-grandchild ? and an heir to the throne ? that Kate feared she wouldn?t be able to face her without baby news.

According to the palace insider (who has correctly revealed other royal secrets, including their honeymoon location and the queen?s wedding gift to Kate), Kate is definitely pregnant ? and is preparing accordingly. Not just one royal nursery ? but three of them ? are in the works: one in Nottingham Cottage, where Kate and William have been staying, another in their home in Wales and yet another at Kensington Palace, which is undergoing a major refurbishment.

And even though Kate is early in the first trimester, they?re said to have already picked names. ?They want something traditional,? the source hints. ?Edward, Philip and Michael are likely choices for a boy, or Alice or Rose for a girl.? Understandably, Kate and William want to give their little one a name that?s fit for a king ? or preferably, a queen. Since rules were updated so that the firstborn child of the prince wouldn?t have to be male to inherit the throne, William, in particular, is said to be secretly hoping for a daughter. ?He?s very much his mother?s son, and he also knows that his father, Prince Charles, would like a granddaughter,? the insider explains, adding that Kate agrees. ?She?s happiest when William is happy.?

Ricky Gervais Will Return as Golden Globes Host

British comic stirred up controversy last year with his celeb-skewering one-liners and atheist sendoff.

Weeks of debate have finally ended. On Wednesday (November 16), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided with a vote that British comedian Ricky Gervais will return to host the Golden Globes for the third time, according to Variety.

Disagreement among the members of the HFPA and NBC, the network that broadcasts the television and film awards show, about whether the controversial host should return made headlines this week. NBC was Gervais' most vocal proponent, but factions in the HFPA were uneasy about the "Office" creator after his no-holds-barred one-liners targeted some of Hollywood's biggest names and he thanked God for being born an atheist.

After the fallout from Gervais' last turn as host of the Golden Globes, he told several sources that he no longer wished to host the show again. His feelings toward the job changed in recent months, when he became more vocal about wanting to return. He even went as far as suggesting that if he didn't host, he would offer a live running commentary throughout the show.

Once it was clear that talks of the comedian's return were serious, Gervais came out to explain that the holdup was due to the HFPA's indecision and that he had NBC's full support.

The Globes are not the only awards show with a hosting controversy. After Eddie Murphy stepped down as Oscars host, Gervais joked to Deadline that he would host both the Academy Awards and the Globes for a discounted price.

More than a year after they started dating, Nicole ?Snooki? Polizzi and her beau, Jionni LaValle, have split, In Touch can exclusively reveal. ?It happened after her birthday party last weekend in Las Vegas,? a friend says of the 23-year-old Jersey Shore vixen. ?They?re done!?

'Harry Potter' Stars Miss 'Family' Atmosphere

'I miss hanging out with the guys,' actor Oliver Phelps tells MTV News at Wizarding World of Harry Potter event.
By Josh Wigler

ORLANDO, Florida — "Harry Potter" fans, you're not the only ones who adore Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and the rest of the Hogwarts gang. The film series' co-stars share your feelings.

When MTV News visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter's celebration of the "Deathly Hallows Part 2" DVD and Blu-ray release, we asked your favorite actors what they miss most about working on the eight-film fantasy epic. The answers we received were unanimous: the "Potter" cast miss one another.

"I miss hanging out with the guys," lamented Oliver Phelps, one-half of the hilarious Weasley twins. "A Harry Potter film isn't like a normal movie. It's stretched out for nine months, it's big-budget ... but we'd all just have fun, though. It's not like there's all this stress to do anything. I miss hanging out with everyone all the time. But we still keep in contact and I know we'll continue to do that."

"It was a really nice atmosphere," agreed Jesse Cave, who played Ron Weasley's obsessive stalker Lavender Brown. "And I've worked in some horrible atmospheres. This was like being on a holiday. It was nice to be treated nice!"

For actors Devon Murray and Alfie Enoch, who starred in all eight "Potter" movies as Gryffindor supporting players Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas, respectively, leaving the franchise behind was like saying goodbye to family.

"It was a real family, to use a cliché," Enoch said. "It's the only real way of describing it to people who weren't there. It was such a tight-knit group. I miss being around with everyone."

But even though the story's been told, the journey isn't over. Rupert Grint, for one, sees a bright side to the end of "Potter."

"It was a very sad day, the day we finished," he admitted. "[But] it's so great that we have these events where we can meet up now and again and relive all the good times."

What do you miss the most about "Potter"? Tell us in the comments.

Kristen Stewart's Big 'Nerdy' Week

The 'Breaking Dawn' star's 'Snow White' trailer and possible 'Akira' casting are hot topics on 'Talk Nerdy to Me.'
By Josh Wigler

Kristen Stewart in "Snow White & The Huntsman"
Photo: Universal

Kristen Stewart is having a big week. Not only is she kicking off the first of her final two "Twilight" films with Friday's (November 18) release of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1," she also set the geek world on fire with her "Snow White and the Huntsman" trailer and reports that she could join the cast of "Akira," based on the beloved Katsuhiro Otomo anime and manga of the same name.

But the reactions to those two projects have been decidedly mixed — as with all things, there's some good and some bad — so it's up to us to dive into those topics and more on this week's episode of "Talk Nerdy to Me."Keep reading for a taste of all the "Nerdy"-ness that awaits you this week!

KStew Approaches "Akira"
News dropped earlier this week that an offer has been made to Stewart to join the cast of "Akira" as Kei, the psychokinetic female lead. It's not necessarily Stewart's casting that has fans so up in arms, but the very nature of the project itself: Gone are the Asian influences of the original "Akira," as Neo-Tokyo is renamed Neo-Manhattan and an all-Japanese cast is turned into an all-white one, among other grievances. "Nerdy" resident fanboy Brian Phares and MTV Geek's Alex Zalben were divided on their feelings on the "Akira" adaptation; find out what they had to say in this week's episode.

Kristen's Total "Snow" Out
While not everyone is on-board with Stewart approaching "Akira," the support for her work in "Snow White and the Huntsman" is unanimous. Kristen's debut as the fairy-tale-princess-turned-cunning-warrior electrified the Web last Thursday and continues to impress over a week later. But Stewart's not the only fairest maiden around: Lily Collins made her Snow White debut in the "Mirror, Mirror" trailer, which has not been as warmly received ... with the exception of one "Talk Nerdy" host (definitely not yours truly, you guys), who can't contain his excitement for Tarsem Singh's next movie. (Seriously, I'm really pumped.)

Doctor Potter
Moving away from Kristen for a moment, the nerdosphere was taken by surprise this week with the announcement that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" director David Yates would be launching a big-screen take on "Doctor Who," the popular BBC television series that's been around for nearly 50 years now. There's some skepticism that this vision of "Who" will ever see theaters, though Zalben, our resident "Who" expert, has a different take on the news.

Men of Steel, Too!
In other surprising movie news, rumors emerged this week that "Man of Steel" is already ramping up its sequel. Warner Bros. is reportedly seeking writers for a follow-up to Zack Snyder's Superman film — a year and a half ahead of that movie's June 2013 release, mind you — and Team Nerdy pondered whether it's just too early to look so far ahead.

"Breaking" the Box Office
We closed out this week's episode with another round of Stewart-related goodness, examining the box-office prospects for "Breaking Dawn." Spoiler alert: It's going to make a metric you-know-what ton of money. We also looked ahead at next week's new releases and vocalized our support for the return of the "Muppets." Get all of our box-office analysis in this week's "Talk Nerdy."

Gerard Butler is Playing the Field

gerardb1_wide.jpg
Gerard Butler?s most recent film, Playing the Field, is due out in March 2012, and centers on a former professional athlete coaching his son?s soccer team. So, of course In Touch had to ask if the Scottish actor was getting any pointers from his friend David Beckham. ?I talked to him, we tried to get him in the movie and he was going to do it but it didn?t quite work out. He is the sweetest guy; I wish we?d had him in the movie.?

Gerard must be in a sporty mood because not only did he just wrap up a soccer movie, but he?s moved on to surfing for his next film. And the actor is taking it pretty seriously! ?There was a big swell that came into LA about five weeks ago and I got into some, I got into a kind of pretty hairy situation where I got hit down by a wave, thought it was funny, then got hit down by another one and ended up getting hit by a set of like 12 waves! They just kept coming and I really thought that I, I started to go I?m not going to make it out of here! I learned a lot from that, really just how to relax.?

And speaking of relaxing, how is Gerard going to be spending this holiday season? ?Thanksgiving no plans but Christmas I always go home and spend it with my family and spend time in the Highlands. Then New Year?s is always a surprise where I end up. Last year I ended up in Uruguay. I always end up in strange places!?
