'Avengers' Producer Jon Favreau Reveals His Marvel Role

'My involvement is just to be as supportive as I can be,' former 'Iron Man' director tells MTV News.

When Jon Favreau bowed out of the "Iron Man" franchise in December, the filmmaker made clear he remained on good terms with Marvel execs and that he'd stay within the studio family as an executive producer on the upcoming superhero all-star flick, "The Avengers."

But with Favreau busy with directorial duties on the alien-Western hybrid "Cowboys & Aliens" and prep work on "Magic Kingdom," his Disney World-set family picture, it remained to be seen how involved he'd be with "Avengers," which kicked off filming in April. Now, as the "Avengers" teaser trailer has leaked (after appearing in the post-credits sequence of "Captain America") and fans have gotten their first look at what director Joss Whedon has done with that collection of superheroes, we're also getting an idea of Favreau's role in the action.

"My involvement is just to be as supportive as I can be. Most of the cast is people that came onboard to work with me on the 'Iron Man' film, so I feel a sense of responsibility to them. I really hope it works out," Favreau told MTV News while promoting "Cowboys & Aliens." "I'm not in the trenches with them and I'm not making creative decisions on their behalf, but I'm completely available and of service."

That's a far cry from how fans might have thought things would play out back in 2008, when Favreau said he'd be open to directing "Avengers." But in October 2009, MTV News broke the news he wouldn't be helming the film, and after "Iron Man 2" hit theaters last year, he ceded directorial duties on that franchise to Shane Black. These days, Favreau said Whedon is a far better choice to direct "Avengers" than he ever would be.

"They have Joss Whedon, who's a very talented guy and is really good with ensembles and really understands the superhero genre better than I do," Favreau explained. "I understand 'Iron Man' very, very well, especially the 'Iron Man' movie and the cast and the characters all built to one thing. But there are other characters that I don't know. Each filmmaker had a different approach to how they went about it — 'Captain America' is coming out, 'Thor.' The combining of all those things is going to be its own thing in and of itself that Joss has embraced and wrote the script. I expect big things."

Guiliana Rancic?s Food For Thought

"I went to Italy, and I consumed way too many calories a day, but I didn?t care," Giuliana told Celebuzz. "Bill and I made a deal on the plane over that we can?t say no to anything, including food. Like, if Bill says, "Let?s have a crepe," I can?t say no ? even though I just had a gelato, and I?m full. We indulged like crazy for two weeks, but we took really long walks in the vineyards, and we stayed active. And when we got back to Los Angeles, we were back at Equinox the next day on the treadmill."

As for the rest of the trip to Italy, Giuliana and Bill visited the church they got married in and reflected on that day ? when they were surrounded by so many friends and family and so much love.

'Harry Potter' Star Emma Watson Will Be Back Onscreen Soon

'My Week With Marilyn' and 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' are the first two post-'Potter' projects Watson lined up.

We hope Emma Watson has already digested her post-"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" brunch. Because now that she's finished the project that virtually defined a decade of her life, the actress has plenty to look forward to.

The 21-year-old starlet did just a few non-"Potter" acting roles during her time with the franchise, only separating herself from Hermione long enough to star in the 2007 BBC film "Ballet Shoes" and lend her voice to 2008's "Tales of Despereaux." Now, she has wrapped her first two post-"Potter" films and is excited for people to see her outside of a "Harry Potter" capacity.

Up first is the Michelle Williams-starring adaptation of "My Week With Marilyn," based on Laurence Olivier's assistant's account of spending time with Marilyn Monroe (Williams) while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl." Watson plays a character named Lucy who goes on a few dates with leading man Eddie Redmayne. It's a minor role for a small film (which is slated for release this November), but it's garnering a lot of attention because of Watson's involvement.

"I've seen a trailer for it. It looks pretty amazing," Watson told MTV News at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. "I mean, Michelle is an incredible actress, and Eddie Redmayne is also in it, so he did a great job."

But her upcoming film that's getting the most buzz is the Summit Entertainment adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's coming-of-age novel, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." Watson plays Sam, the love interest of main character Charlie (played by Logan Lerman). It wrapped shooting several weeks ago, and Watson told us at the Movie Awards that the expectation was to turn it around and get it released quickly.

"It's so funny because I never thought I'd make another sort of high school-esque movie, and here I am in this coming-of-age, American teen [movie]," she said. "But it's very witty, and it's very funny and it's very moving, so I'm excited."

'Captain America' Clip: Chris Evans Is Skinny But Heroic

On Thursday (July 14), Captain America himself, Chris Evans, presented an exclusive new clip from his highly anticipated caped crusade "Captain America: The First Avenger" on MTV and MTV.com.

The clip opens with fan-favorite actors Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci, in the roles of Colonel Chester Phillips and Dr. Abraham Erskine, walking through an Army base, watching a group of recruits in their basic-training exercises. Phillips is talking to Erskine about their new unimpressive recruit Steve Rogers (a skinny Evans, pre-super serum and superhero status), who looks to be having trouble with his jumping jacks.

"When you brought a 90-pound asthmatic onto my Army base, I let it slide. I thought, 'What the hell? Maybe he'd be useful to you like a gerbil,' " Phillips says to Erskine about Rogers, before stopping to watch him. "Look at that — he's making me cry."

Phillips points out another stronger recruit jumping alongside Evans, who boasts impressive scores in every military test they've given him. Erskine calls him a bully, but Phillips doesn't care.

"You don't win wars with niceness, Doctor; you win wars with guts," he says before tossing a grenade into the group to see how they react. All the recruits scramble away to safety, except for Rogers, who jumps on the grenade himself to protect everyone else. The grenade turns out to be a dummy.

"Is this a test?" Rogers asks his senior officers, after showcasing an early glimpse of the hero he is to become.

"He's still skinny," Phillips says, seemingly unimpressed, to a smiling Erskine.

"Either they don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's going on in the 'hood."

In that line lays the crux of John Singleton's 1991 film "Boyz N the Hood." Delivered by Ice Cube's character, Doughboy, those words ring as true today, 20 years later, as they did when the film first hit theaters. Released on July 12 of that year, "Boyz N the Hood" was a gritty, cinematic depiction of the lives of three young African-American men growing up in inner-city Los Angeles. On Wednesday's (July 13) "RapFix Live," Ice Cube broke down the cultural significance of the film that launched his acting career.

"When we first did the movie 'Boyz N the Hood,' we felt like we was teaching America about a part of itself that they don't see," he explained. "We was teaching you about people like Doughboy and why he is the way he is."

But while Cube's Doughboy was an unapologetic gangster who couldn't see a way out of the 'hood and the gang culture that consumed him, his half-brother Ricky Baker (Morris Chestnut) used football as a means to earn a college scholarship that might ultimately take him out of the ghetto. Their friend Tre, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., struggled to balance the life lessons that his father (Laurence Fishburne) passed onto him with the reality of the streets. And for Cube, the circumstances addressed in the movie still ring true after two decades.

"The movie holds up. The movie had been used as a tool to teach people about the 'hood that they may not know about," he said. "I think the movie is a definite classic, it definitely holds up, it's definitely as potent today as it was back then. The message is definitely as clear today and needed as it was back then."

Ice Cube: 'Boyz N The Hood' Still 'As Potent' 20 Years Later

'We felt like we was teaching America about a part of itself that they don't see,' Cube tells 'RapFix Live.'

"Either they don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's going on in the 'hood."

In that line lays the crux of John Singleton's 1991 film "Boyz N the Hood." Delivered by Ice Cube's character, Doughboy, those words ring as true today, 20 years later, as they did when the film first hit theaters. Released on July 12 of that year, "Boyz N the Hood" was a gritty, cinematic depiction of the lives of three young African-American men growing up in inner-city Los Angeles. On Wednesday's (July 13) "RapFix Live," Ice Cube broke down the cultural significance of the film that launched his acting career.

"When we first did the movie 'Boyz N the Hood,' we felt like we was teaching America about a part of itself that they don't see," he explained. "We was teaching you about people like Doughboy and why he is the way he is."

But while Cube's Doughboy was an unapologetic gangster who couldn't see a way out of the 'hood and the gang culture that consumed him, his half-brother Ricky Baker (Morris Chestnut) used football as a means to earn a college scholarship that might ultimately take him out of the ghetto. Their friend Tre, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., struggled to balance the life lessons that his father (Laurence Fishburne) passed onto him with the reality of the streets. And for Cube, the circumstances addressed in the movie still ring true after two decades.

"The movie holds up. The movie had been used as a tool to teach people about the 'hood that they may not know about," he said. "I think the movie is a definite classic, it definitely holds up, it's definitely as potent today as it was back then. The message is definitely as clear today and needed as it was back then."

"I went to Italy, and I consumed way too many calories a day, but I didn?t care," Giuliana told Celebuzz. "Bill and I made a deal on the plane over that we can?t say no to anything, including food. Like, if Bill says, "Let?s have a crepe," I can?t say no ? even though I just had a gelato, and I?m full. We indulged like crazy for two weeks, but we took really long walks in the vineyards, and we stayed active. And when we got back to Los Angeles, we were back at Equinox the next day on the treadmill."

As for the rest of the trip to Italy, Giuliana and Bill visited the church they got married in and reflected on that day ? when they were surrounded by so many friends and family and so much love.

'Deathly Hallows, Part 2' could break $158.4 million opening-weekend record of 'The Dark Knight.'

It takes a powerful wizard to defeat "The Dark Knight," but based on early media reports, all indications are that the final episode in the onscreen Harry Potter saga, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," is on track to beat the $158.4 million opening-weekend record set by "The Dark Knight" in 2008.

Thanks to a combination of breathless, nostalgic anticipation for the last installment in the series, a raft of sold-out midnight screenings on Thursday and higher ticket prices for the first 3-D installment in the $6 billion franchise, experts are predicting that a series of records could fall by Sunday.

According to Deadline.com, the estimated two-day worldwide gross for "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is at $142.7 million, with $82.5 million earned internationally from 43 countries, and roughly $60.2 million brought in domestically. The movie had already rolled up an estimated $45 million at the box office by Thursday before the doors had opened for a single showing.

To put that in perspective, it has already beat the $53 million that "Green Lantern" made over the course of its entire opening weekend last month.

"Potter" is opening in 4,575 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, and Deadline Hollywood predicted that based on the early tracking, it could smash the "Dark Knight" high-water mark and possibly reach $180 million in opening-weekend grosses. Another record almost sure to crumble is the biggest single day ever, which was set by "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which pulled in $72 million, a figure that could be eclipsed (pun intended) by an estimated $80 million that "Hallows" is projected to collect between the $40 million in midnight screenings and an additional $40 million on Friday.

Look for "Hallows" to also take the biggest foreign opening-weekend crown, a record recently set by "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which boosted $260 million earlier this summer. "Potter" studio Warner Bros. expects the film to smash that figure, though it's unclear if it will be able to beat the worldwide seven-day opening-gross mark set by "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," which raked in $402 million in its first week in June.

A good sign, though, is that "Hallows" has already broken records Down Under. The Hollywood Reporter noted that following its midnight opening on Wednesday, it took in more than $7.4 million in its first 24 hours in Australia, smashing the previous mark of nearly $1.8 million in the first 24 hours for "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King."

'Boyz N The Hood' Stars Hailed 'Classic Movie' Back In 1991

MTV News looks back on our interview with the all-star cast and director as the South Central L.A. tale was hitting theaters 20 years ago.

In a 1991 interview with MTV News to promote the just-released "Boyz N the Hood," Laurence Fishburne seemed to know what kind of impact the coming-of-age story would have. "John Singleton has made a classic movie," the actor said. Twenty years later, fans are still singing its praises.

This past Tuesday, "Boyz N the Hood" celebrated its 20-year anniversary, and on July 19, the film will be re-released in Blu-ray format. The film, starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne, is set in South Central, Los Angeles, a California neighborhood notorious for gang violence.

At the center of the film is Tre Styles (Gooding Jr.), who tries to balance his father's (Fishburne) life lessons with the harsh realities of the 'hood in which he lived. Then there are half-brothers Doughboy (Cube) and Ricky Baker (Chestnut), two characters who couldn't be more different. Doughboy, a stone-cold gangster, has street respect but very few prospects. His brother Ricky, however, is a young father and a star high school football player fielding sports scholarships from multiple colleges. In the end, Ricky's bright future is brought to a dark close when he's gunned down in an alleyway.

"Well, this is the film that I initially went to film school to make," director Singleton explained to MTV News in the same 1991 interview, days after the film hit theaters. "I had never seen films that reflected where I was coming from growing up in L.A."

"There are so many messages in the film, but if they go and take one message away, it's to keep the love in the family. As long as the love is circulating around, it'll be OK," Gooding Jr. said.

"It's a new kind of perspective," Fishburne added.

Even Cube, who made his Hollywood debut in "Boyz N the Hood," knew back then that the movie would be impactful. "I think we got a real good film. Just to show black people on the screen being people and not just images, as far as not a sports player or a hat and a gun," he said. "You fall in love with these characters, and it's real deep when something happens to them."

And that's why 20 years later, we're still watching.

'The Ward' Star Amber Heard Recalls Filming In Real Asylum

'We were cozily sandwiched between the prison for the criminally insane and the hospital for the mentally insane,' actress tells MTV News.

John Carpenter fans have had a long wait between films from their favorite genre man. The director of cult favorites like "Halloween," "Escape From LA" and "The Thing" has been on a hiatus of sorts but finally returns to multiplexes after a 10-year absence with this week's "The Ward."

This psychological thriller takes place in a special ward in a mental hospital and revolves around new arrival Kristen (Amber Heard), who has no idea how she ended up institutionalized. As she slowly gets to know the other patients, played by Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Lyndsy Fonseca and Laura-Leigh, she realizes they are all hiding a terrible and deadly secret.

When MTV News caught up with Carpenter and Heard to talk about their thriller, we asked how much of a creepy factor was added into the film simply by the practical effect of their filming location — an actual abandoned mental hospital.

"It was in an abandoned building on a campus with crazy people in a mental institution, the criminally insane," Carpenter explained of their set.

"We were cozily sandwiched between the prison for the criminally insane and the hospital for the mentally insane," Heard added. "We had this prime little location right between the two. We were fenced in."

Carpenter said they didn't have to do anything to make the set look scary.

"It's an old building, a dusty old building that they had left and was perfect for us," he said. "What's scary about this location was that it was real. It was just creepy."

When asked to explain if there are any signature shots or nods to Carpenter's previous work that fans might appreciate in this film, the veteran genre director said he can't please everyone, so he focuses on stories that he likes first.

"John Carpenter fans are unexpected human beings. A lot live under freeways and cardboard boxes, a lot live in mental institutions," he said. "I really can't think about them too much when I make a movie. The prime inspiration for me is the story. What kind of story? I got typecast as a horror director in the late '70s with 'Halloween,' but I've managed to have a career by doing different things," he revealed. "This one was great, an all-female cast, an ensemble cast who had to work together in an isolated dark shadowy location, and there's something walking around at night. [It was] great fun."

No matter how you feel about the mean-spirited Draco Malfoy, actor Tom Felton is well aware that the character he's played for 10 years garners mixed reactions from die-hard "Harry Potter" fans. "Either people loved him or loved to hate him," Felton told MTV News during a sit-down chat in preparation for the release of the wildly anticipated "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

Even Felton himself has conflicting feelings about how people react to Malfoy. "It's weird — I never quite know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that Draco is generally ... a pleasantly accepted character," the star said, adding, "I always find it weird when 6-year-olds' parents say, 'You're his favorite character!' I'm always like, 'I'm not sure if I should be. I'm not sure that reflects your great parenting skills!"

But that doesn't mean the MTV Movie Awards winner didn't want his character to win the ongoing "Harry Potter" World Cup. For weeks, "Harry Potter" fans have participated in the bracket game, which will declare the best character in the saga. While Felton's Draco did make it very far in the tournament before being bested by Final Four competitor Sirius Black ("That's a little unfair, I think — don't you?" the 23-year-old pondered to MTV's Josh Horowitz), it wasn't quite far enough to take the whole thing. "I'm bitter about not making it to the final post, but at the same time, I'm very grateful. It's awesome," the actor said.

Still, Felton, despite being voted out, was more than willing to play along in the World Cup. When asked whom he thinks should advance past the Final Four (Hermione Granger vs. Severus Snape, Sirius Black vs. Ron Weasley) and win the whole thing, the actor said, with no hesitation, "Snape." He continued, "Everyone loves Snape. He has the greatest story of the lot, I think, where you don't know which he's going to be the whole way."

While the "Harry Potter" World Cup picks the best character in the series, not just the final film, Felton still thinks Snape takes the cake. "He has a beautiful ending, doesn't he?," Felton asked, adding, "I didn't expect that at all. It's so nice to see this hard character Snape turn into this soft shell of a man."

In short, by Felton's prediction, Severus Snape is "gonna take the crown, man."
