College Football Week 10: Upsets and Statements Aplenty...Now What, BCS?

Now what is the BCS going to do? Everything was rosy until yesterday. Then, the bottom fell out.

Alabama lost to LSU.

This means that an Auburn win over Georgia this week ensures Auburn of the SEC West title, no matter what they do against Alabama, because they defeated LSU in their head-to-head matchup. An Auburn win against Georgia eliminates every other SEC West team from BCS title contention. The SEC East is just terrible and has eliminated itself.

So we now know that Oregon is going to run the table. They are in the national championship game as the No. 1 or No. 2 team. That is about as certain as you can get in the NCAA. If Auburn wins out, the title game is set. If Auburn loses, then the fun begins.

We can eliminate the ACC and Big East champs. Those two conferences are just terrible.

We can eliminate the Big 12. They are a terrible conference. Nebraska has to claw their way to a one-point win over Iowa State. Missouri stinks. OU and Texas are huge disappointments.

We can eliminate the Big Ten. That is going to be a major merry-go-round. It appears that Ohio State, Michigan State and Wisconsin will tie. Iowa is still in the picture, but has two losses and is easily the worst of the four teams.

We will eliminate everyone in the SEC except Auburn if they defeat Georgia next week.

We KNOW that both Boise State and TCU will run the table.

TCU was very impressive beating the caca out of Utah, and Boise State also hammered Hawaii. TCU waltzes to an undefeated season, hosting San Diego State, and finishing at New Mexico.

Boise State still has a game at one-loss Nevada, and three other games to navigate, but should have no problems. Both teams beat Oregon State, but Oregon State sucks. They lost to UCLA yesterday, giving them four losses on the year. Boise State does have a win over the best ACC team: Va. Tech. TCU has a win over three-loss Baylor.

So if Auburn loses, who plays Oregon in the championship game?

My take is simple. The best conference overall is almost impossible to determine. The Pac-10 may have the best duo in Oregon and Stanford. The SEC may have the best duo in Auburn and LSU. The problem is that LSU is eliminated if Auburn defeats Georgia. This will leave just three undefeated teams: Oregon, who will be No. 1, Boise State and TCU.

I think that Boise State will eventually out-poll TCU because they finish with a tougher schedule, playing at one-loss Nevada. Either way, the BCS cannot ignore both undefeated non-BCS teams. It is obvious that both Boise State and TCU can play with anyone at a neutral site. Those who think not had better wake up and smell the coffee.

So here is how I see the BCS bowl picture as of now:

BCS: Oregon vs Boise State.
Sugar: Auburn vs TCU
Orange: Va.Tech vs LSU
Fiesta: Nebraska vs Pitt
Rose: Ohio State vs Stanford.

Now the Rose Bowl could opt to take TCU instead of Stanford, but I doubt it. If Auburn wins out, then everything changes:

BCS: Oregon vs Auburn
Sugar: LSU vs TCU
Orange: Va. Tech vs Wisconsin
Fiesta: Nebraska vs Pitt
Rose: Boise State vs Ohio State.

All of this is obviously subject to change, especially the Big Ten participants, but as of now, that is how I see it.
