LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz didn't hesitate when he was asked whether QB Jay Cutler is losing confidence after another rough outing in Sunday's loss to Washington.
"If you know Jay, then you'd know not to ask that question because he is a strong man," Martz said at Halas Hall on Wednesday. "He is very, very, very strong emotionally and likes what we do and is confident."
Cutler, who was picked off four times by Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall in Week Seven, did not throw at Wednesday's light practice and he said it was the coaching staff's decision to rest him, not his own.
The Bears apparently want to make sure Cutler, who has taken a beating behind an offensive line that has allowed him to be sacked a league-high 27 times in six games, returns from a Week Eight bye well rested.
"Even though he feels good, his body, he needs to rest," Martz said. "We'll throw him a little bit tomorrow."
Chicago will use the bye to recharge and try to fix some of the problems that have consistently plagued its offense. Cutler didn't seem to like the line of questioning when he was asked just where to start in correcting the issues.
"That's a very negative question," he said. "… Obviously, offensively we have some things we need to clean up. We're aware of that and we're going to address it this week."
Despite the obvious weaknesses, the Bears have a 4-3 record and are in first place in the NFC North, as Cutler pointed out, and they'll face the Bills, who have yet to win a game this season, in Week Nine.
