PFW associate editor Dan Parr presents a running meter that indicates the Bears' top five MVP candidates through their most recent game:
(Last week's ranking in parentheses)
1. QB Jay Cutler (1): He wasn't helped much by an offensive line that seems determined to let him get hit, but Cutler's Sunday performance was not a good one. The Seahawks sacked him six times, hit him three more times and it looked like the week off didn't do anything but make Cutler a little rusty. He's still No. 1 on the Meter, but he hasn't been playing like a MVP lately.
2. MLB Brian Urlacher (2): It's what Urlacher did in the previous five games, and not Sunday, that has him this high on the Meter. He made six tackles vs. Seattle and leads the team in stops (41), but he didn't make any of the big impact plays we are accustomed to seeing from him.
3. DE Julius Peppers (3): This may have been Peppers' worst game as a Bear. Don't forget how great he has been in almost every other game, though. Peppers was double-teamed on occasion, but he was matched up one-on-one against rookie OLT Russell Okung for much of the game and only managed to make two tackles, no sacks and no quarterback hits.
4. WR-PR Devin Hester (NR): Aside from Cutler and RB Matt Forté, no Bears player has more touchdowns than Hester (three). His ability to make big plays as a receiver and a punt returner is why he narrowly leads Forté on the Meter. Hester gave the Bears a chance late in the game Sunday, cutting the lead to three with an 89-yard punt return for a TD.
5. RB Matt Forté (4): Forté was mostly ineffective on the runs he did have Sunday, but he was underutilized one week after rushing for 166 yards. He only had eight carries for just 11 yards — his six-yard rush gave the Bears an early lead on the opening drive of the game — and made three catches for 40 yards.
