There has been a lot of talk about what losing Randy Moss will do to the Patriots' offense. The most obvious change is that the Pats lose their best deep threat. But we took a closer look at the numbers to see that QB Tom Brady excels at passes attempted in the 1-to-10-yard range, where the Patriots are one of the best in the league.
80: Brady's accuracy on throws at this short range is 80 percent, completing 60-of-75 attempts through four games. That's tied with the Titans' quarterbacks for best percentage in the league.
8: The Patriots use short-range throws to get into the endzone. They are second in the league with eight percent of their throws between one and 10 yards resulting in a TD.
125.1: Brady's passer rating on the short-range throws is the best in the league. He has thrown six TDs and zero INTs in passes attempted less than 10 yards.
Things get dicey when Brady decides to throw the ball downfield.
25: Brady is 3-of-12 passing, good for 25 percent, on throws of 21 yards or longer. He is also 0-for-5 in his attempts at completing a pass of 41 yards or more.
While the jury is still out on how losing Moss will affect how open Brady's favorite targets, WR Wes Welker and TE Aaron Hernandez, will be in that 1-to-10-yard range, the Pats' success this season has come on those short throws. And reacquiring WR Deion Branch, a guy used to the Patriots' system, should bolster that passing game.
